As so often, be careful with the first votes via Twitter, these are usually a bit more exuberant than the following extensive reviews and opinions. Yet the first voices ofAvatar 2: The way of the waterare pretty damn positive for the most part – and should feed the anticipation not only of “Avatar” fans, but of all those who want to experience epic action, big movies and/or 3D in the cinema. Because that’s exactly what the film should offer – and not just as a pure spectacle, but combined with an emotional story.
“Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” is truly the must-see cinema event that will still exist in 2022 that everyone was hoping for.
describes “Avatar 2” as “phenomenal”. The film is “bigger, better and more emotional” than its predecessor.
happy to say #AvatarTheWayOfWater is phenomenal! Bigger, better and more emotional than #avatar, the film is visually stunning, visceral and incredibly compelling. The story, the spectacle, the spirituality, the beauty – this is filmmaking and storytelling at its best. pic.twitter.com/RicnpDghrx

A documentation? Really shot at Pandora?
movie reviewer even describes the film as a mixture of nature documentary and blockbuster. The third act is epic, leaving the audience “breathless and in tears”.
#AvatarTheWayOfWater is an awe-inspiring mix between a nature documentary and a blockbuster – a thrilling three-hour journey through the oceans of Pandora with deep feeling at its core and an unspeakably epic third act that will leave you breathless and in tears. pic.twitter.com/f1Z6SiQQAh

Talk about “nature documentation”. Bryant’s colleague explains that he was almost convinced that James Cameron actually shot his movie on Pandora. He calls “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” a “must-see event”!

Technical masterpiece….
Focused on the technical masterpiece , whose jaw dropped at the 3D experience. He felt the way he did when he first saw “Terminator 2” as a kid.
James Camerons #AvatarTheWayOfWater is a monumental achievement in filmmaking with a great balance between technical and emotional. The 48fps 3D experience offers some of the most immersive immersion I’ve ever seen. Felt like a kid again watching T2 for the first time. astonishing pic.twitter.com/cfiMADJzU4

also saw a film that promotes CGI technology that is a must see at IMAX:
#AvatarTheWayOfWater pushes CGI to new places and uses the word “family” more than any F&F movie. While some of the new characters are underused, Pandora is miraculously realized, the underwater world is glorious, and the final third is packed with incredible action – see in IMAX!

But the fact that it’s not just about admiring technology makes sense clear: the technology always serves the characters and the structure of the world:
#AvatarTheWayOfWater is pretty incredible. I was confident that James Cameron would raise the bar with the effects, but these images are stunning. One beautiful frame after another. But what I’ve dug into the most is how the tech feats always feel in the service of character and world-building. pic.twitter.com/MXeN3z8BnP

… which also moves
So also praise that there is “a much greater emotional connection to the characters and story” than in the first volume:
Never bet against @JimCameron. To be #AvatarTheWayOfWater surpasses the original on every level. Incredible visuals, but a much more emotional connection to the characters and story. In the final hour, Cameron flexes every muscle, reminding blockbuster filmmakers how to do it. pic.twitter.com/C7lpBs6y5U

Also critic praises the emotional side. Any CGI artificiality disappears behind the humanity of the characters:
James Cameron & Co. deliver another immersive, awe-inspiring masterclass in world-building with #AvatarTheWayOfWater . Compelling, emotionally captivating and epically entertaining, it’s a thrilling ride. CG artifact melts away where we just look at the humanity of the characters pic.twitter.com/6CksGpEumJ

It is clear that the immense duration is not a problem away from here:
So, #AvatarTheWayOfWater is one of the most visually stunning movies I’ve seen. Incredible on an almost obscene level. Crucially, it also manages an engaging story with new and returning characters. Yes, it’s long at over 3 hours, but James Cameron just left and gave a damn… pic.twitter.com/oBjoWwiGaF

“Light years better than the first part”
Even the one who is often known for being highly critical of blockbusters let yourself be carried away to a few anniversaries. The film is “light years better than the first and easily one of the best movie experiences in ages.”
I was, uh, not exactly a fan of an Avatar 2 (even if “James Cameron + wet” tends to work pretty well). now I can’t *wait* to see Avatar 3. That’s really all I wanted to get out of this and it delivered a great result.

wasn’t a fan of the first part, but was now blown away by the sequel:
As someone who LOVEs — but not LOVE — from the first AVATAR, I want to tell you:
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER blew me away.
The sequel was vastly superior in visuals, storytelling and performances and left my jaw on the floor for its entire runtime.
James Cameron is the GOD of sequels. pic.twitter.com/1cw6C94O4f

A few critical nuances
There are only a few critical notes in a few voices, which are then happily ignored in the first short Twitter comments. The Swiss colleague is an exception to this who also praises the “breathtaking underwater scenes”, among other things, but also notes that the “overwhelming spectacle has a bit of trouble juggling its many characters”.
About this trip to London: #AvatarTheWayOfWater brings us back to Pandora with perfect craftsmanship – the underwater scenes and the nearly hour-long confrontation are breathtaking. A stunning spectacle that takes a bit of effort to juggle its many characters. pic.twitter.com/1MsaNTC1VC
— Christoph Schelb (@Schelbyville) December 7, 2022
These are the critical nuances that can also be found in some other voices. For example, thinks that the film impresses more than it really fascinates:
Avatar: The Way of Water is a film to be admired rather than loved – a remarkable spectacle, a throwback to the Titanic set pieces, some truly beautiful visual delights. But it’s also endless, plodding long and more impressive than really captivating.
— Christina Newland (@christinalefou) December 6, 2022
James Cameron’s dialogues are also often scrutinized – “Avatar: The Way Of Water” is no exception. Here it is who critically notes:
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER introduces a new water culture on Pandora that is technically prodigious. James Cameron’s dialogue still struggles, but his storytelling soars as he invests us emotionally in the new characters and creatures. A heartfelt, stunning epic worth waiting for. pic.twitter.com/ZUqdJ4Nawd
— Matt Neglia (@NextBestPicture) December 6, 2022
had problems integrating the narrative strands:
So, #AvatarTheWayOfWater: Liked it, didn’t love it. The good news is that 3D is back on track (yay!), and the action is pretty incredible (especially in the last act). But many of the storylines feel like they have to stop and start, and the high frame rate was a hit for me. pic.twitter.com/eY4G76R1AJ
— Amon Warmann (@AmonWarmann) December 6, 2022
found it a bit annoying that “Avatar 2” ended up feeling like an intermediate step to the upcoming “Avatar 3”:
Avatar: The Way of Water is an EPIC, STUNNING, CINEMATIC ADVENTURE. It delivers both action and heart, giving fans an intriguing story that feels deserved and justified. Never doubt James Cameron. Biggest Problem: Feels like a springboard for what’s next.#AvatarTheWayofWater pic.twitter.com/dQBEfBkN7z
— Tessa Smith – Mama’s Geeky (@MamasGeeky) December 6, 2022
But even with all these tweets with a critical undertone, enthusiasm eventually dominateswhich also consists of every letter of the tweet from jumps:
it’s an Avatar movie: slow start, big build up, incredibly compelling second act with loads of world building and cool creatures blessing your way out, then an hour of screaming good crystal clear emotionally sharp action to get you home full and happy send

Now it will be an unbearably long week for many moviegoers before they finally go to the cinema. “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” begins December 14, 2022 in German cinemas. Directed by James Cameron. The cast once again includes Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, as well as many newcomers such as Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis and Jermaine Clement.
