The cost of a city break is an important consideration for many when planning a trip. With a recent data analysis, the booking platform Omio wants to help bargain hunters plan their trip.
The result is a “ranking of the best low-cost travel destinations,” the makers write. To be honest, we were sometimes amazed by the list – especially at place 3. Of course we don’t want to withhold the full ranking. Perhaps you can explain one or the other placement from experience – or not.
From Switzerland, the cities of Basel, Bern, Biel, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, Lucerne, St.Gallen, Winterthur and Zurich were involved in the evaluation (selection criteria in the info box).
Seven of the ten Swiss cities rank 94 to 100. Lucerne still displaces London at 93. Zurich is a little further up the ranking at 70th, while Lugano holds the top Swiss position at 59th.
The poor rankings of the Swiss cities are partly due to the expensive “Dinner for 2”, “Fast-Food menus”, few options for city tours, few cheap tours and the lack of free Wi-Fi spots.
Florence makes the top 10, just ahead of Barcelona, with 345 free things to do, plus 17 free museums and 113 free attractions.
In Malaga, tourists benefit from cheap tours and low prices for food and drinks.
In Seville, Omio counted 206 free activities. Just like in Malaga, you also save money on transport and food.
The only English city in the top rankings. Sightseeing tours in Cambridge are cheap and the range of bars and clubs is also worth mentioning for the size of the city.

With 321 free activities and 28 free entry museums, the Scottish capital offers almost endless opportunities for bargain hunters.
Like the other Spanish cities, Valencia scores with low prices for transport and food. There was 0.6 points missing from the end of stage assessment.
We get on stage and so to Venice. Yes, we were surprised too. But apparently not all of Venice is like St. Mark’s Square. If you want to drink a coffee there, you almost have to go to an ATM afterwards.
Omio writes: “With a few simple but effective tricks, even the expensive patch becomes a low-budget travel dream.” There are 136 sights to see for free (for example, St. Mark’s Square or the Rialto Bridge). In addition, 22 museums can be visited for free and you can quench your thirst at one of the 186 public drinking fountains.
Bruges is worth a stroll through the medieval city. You can do 42 activities for free. And a tour of the chocolate capital of the world is also affordable.
Bargain hunters will be happiest in Granada in southern Spain. 112 free activities, including the Alhambra. This also offers a museum with free entry. The classic city tour is also very cheap here and you can get a beer for as little as 2.50 euros – one of the lowest values in the entire ranking.
