New flash radiation therapy for cancer

The device will be manufactured by medical technology company Theryq. This is based on technology from CERN, the European nuclear research center near Geneva, as the three partners jointly announced on Friday. Flash radiation therapy uses very high-energy electron beams.

The aim is to better treat resistant tumors and reduce side effects. It was said on Friday that with the use of the device to be developed, the irritation caused by radiation therapy will be reduced to a few milliseconds. This will preserve healthy body tissue.

The new technology enables the treatment of areas up to 20 centimeters deep in the body and is effective against all types of cancer.

The new device at CHUV is scheduled to be operational within two years. The first clinical trials are scheduled for 2025. Two foundations made it possible to launch the project with a contribution of approximately CHF 26 million.
