The sandwich is being resold – actually why?

What happens without meat? as good as bread
How about Breadless Sandwich? as good as meat
You are afraid when you eat your bread with meat
Scary when dealing with bread and meat
Berchunnsch es Sändwitsch: bread and meat
Lue, get enough revenge.

(Mani Matter: «Think of a Sandwich»)

“It’s not good,” says Tim Mälzer (51). “Not good.” The German chef poured a generous amount of sweet soy sauce into a pan with caramelized mushrooms on the TV show “Kitchen Impossible” (Vox). In the series, Mälzer simply has to cook the famous dishes of the star chefs, indescribable. He tastes the mushrooms and realizes that the soy sauce was an irreversible mistake.

Sweat breaks out, Mälzer curses and creates a meal that the judges give him a 6.6 out of 10. This time it’s not about boeuf bourguignon, shakshuka or Japanese pancakes – it’s a sandwich that Mälzer had to copy all in “Kitchen Impossible”. It was created by Zineb “Zizi” Hattab (33), a chef at the Kle and Dar restaurants in Zurich.

“What’s a Sandwitsch, no meat? Mani Matter says “As good as bread” in the song “Think of a sandwich.” This is a completely outdated statement in terms of current gourmet trends. Zizi Hattab’s bread, called barbecue bun, provides the grilled flavor with mushrooms. Old With 15 Gault Millau points, Kle is also the first gourmet restaurant in Switzerland that does not use any animal products.

200 sandwiches per person per year

The pandemic and working from home have at times greatly threatened the sandwich’s status as a popular snack for office workers. Especially in metropolitan areas like London, where most of their residents drive to work a few hours a day, people suddenly have a lot more time to spare. Prepare yourself or put a ready-made meal in the oven – no problem in your own kitchen.

According to market research firm Kantar, the British bought 1.3 billion fewer sandwiches during quarantine than during “normal” times. The British normally eat 11.5 billion sandwiches a year. About 200 people per adult, according to The Guardian.

Meanwhile, the situation has apparently calmed down. This is indicated by the so-called Pret Index, which the American media company Bloomberg has calculated since March 2021. What initially sounds like an April Fool’s joke is a clever way to observe the change in the working situation of city dwellers since the pandemic began.

Economy explodes when sandwiches are sold

Pret is short for Pret A Manger, a British sandwich chain with dozens of branches in all major financial districts around the world. The Pret Index measures how strongly the chain’s sales have improved compared to pre-pandemic. If they are doing well, it is an indication that more people are working locally again, which is a sign that things are improving in the financial sector.

By mid-July 2022, “Pret” in London and Paris was selling about 80 percent of what the chain had sold before the pandemic. Hong Kong’s financial district was less successful at 65 percent. Things were looking really bad in the city of New York, hit hard by Corona. Only 45 percent of old sales were restored in the Midtown area, and only 38 percent in Downtown.

Pret A Manger is currently expanding in Switzerland, but unfortunately there is no Pret index for the banking center around the Paradeplatz in Zurich, and the Sprüngli confectionery chain, which operates its largest store there, does not provide any information on sales figures.

Vegetarian varieties are also booming in Switzerland

When Migros was asked, he said that the tight work-from-home hours had an effect on the distance to go (“to take away”), but the numbers had been picking up very well in recent months. Plus: the meatless sandwich market will grow in the future. The Valora Group, which owns the Brezelkönig stands, also believes in this.

This fits in with the chips sandwich revival that British food stars like Nigella Lawson (62) are so enthusiastic about right now. It consists of two slices of white bread spread with crumbly salted butter and chips between loaves of bread, as in a vise. To create particularly good combinations, the Subway sandwich chain hired Tiktok star Poppy O’Toole, 27, also known as the “potato queen,” as a crispy sandwich sommelier.

The kitchen editor of “Tags-Anzeiger” can become addicted to the crunchy sound that can be heard when biting into a chip sandwich, similar to the popping of a champagne cone. This trend must have emerged in the home office phase, where no coworker had to inadvertently hear the noise.
