Ten percent of the population changed their home in 2021

Compared to the previous year, 2020, that’s a slight decrease of 0.2 percent, as the Federal Statistics Office (BFS) announced on Friday. Almost three-quarters of those who moved in 2021 remained in the same canton. 15 percent changed cantons and 11 percent moved abroad.

The canton of Basel-Stadt had the highest rate of resettlement with 12.8 percent of the population, while the canton of Obwalden had the lowest at 8.2 percent. City dwellers are more likely to move (11 percent) than “country vagrants” (8.1 percent). People aged 20 to 35 move most often (21.3 percent).

With a share of 8.4 percent, the Swiss were significantly more settled than the foreign nationals at 15.1 percent. Men change homes slightly more often than women.

On average, the distance between the old and new settlements was 13 kilometers. In almost 40 percent of cases the radius was a maximum of two kilometers. Only one in nine people move to a new place more than 30 kilometers from their old place of residence.
