A new series “Teletubbies” will be available on Netflix from November 14. Reason enough to find out who is behind the popular original characters – or rather, in their costumes!
Did you know, for example, that the public has only known who is behind the baby sun for a few years now? Here you can see who the actress is and who is behind Tinky Winky, Laa-Laa, Po and Dipsy.
Tinky Winky, the tallest of the four Teletubbies (3.35 meters from base to antenna), is played by two different actors.
It started with actor and comedian Dave Thompson. He played Tinky Winky for 70 episodes. BBC justified Thompson’s dismissal as follows: “The interpretation of the role was unacceptable”.
However, Thompson was only in the costume and the voice was provided by someone else: Mark Heenehan.
Nikky Smedley is a dancer, director and theater consultant. She also trains adults in the art of storytelling for children and teaches Pilates.
Even after the end of “Teletubbies”, British-Chinese actress Pui Fan Lee continued to work for the BBC children’s programmes.
In 2017, she toured with actor Chris Jarvis with a children’s theater performance called The Chris and Pui Show.
There have long been rumors about the Sun actor’s identity; several people claimed they played the baby sun in Teletubbies. It wasn’t until 2014 – 13 years after the end of the broadcast – that the real actress came forward: Jess Smith. Only her family knew about this role. She was discovered in the hospital and the producers were immediately convinced of her smile.
In a recent interview, Smith told Stern that she currently works at a law firm.
