Sore throat or runny nose are often symptoms of a cold. It’s time to protect your own body and support the immune system in the fight against pathogens. One or the other may consider helping with recovery with a glass of schnapps or wine.
Unfortunately, this often has the opposite effect. The reason: The already weakened immune system is put under additional pressure by the breakdown of alcohol in the liver. This way, the body is deprived of the precious energy it needs to use to fight the cold.
Avoid alcohol when you have a cold
Another negative effect of alcohol on the body is dehydration. Drinking alcoholic beverages is doubly counterproductive, as you have to meet your increased fluid needs when you have a cold. In addition, especially highly resistant alcohol attacks the already stressed mucous membranes of the mouth and throat area.
Therefore, it is recommended to avoid alcoholic beverages during a cold, as they do more harm than good to the healing process. You should also avoid a glass of wine when you have a cold.
Because of their limited sense of smell, wines often smell funny when you have a cold. The best thing to do when you have a cold is to pack a particularly nice bottle of wine with you and enjoy it as soon as you’re healthy again.
