After being (more or less) one heart and soul in the adventure comedies ‘The Hunt for the Green Diamond’ and ‘The Hunt for the Jewel from the Nile’, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner battled it out in ‘The War of the Roses’. ‘, directed by Danny DeVito, depicts a bitter divorce war that escalates in increasingly treacherous and brutal ways.
The dark comedy struck a chord in 1989 and became a real hit, grossing $160 million worldwide (against a production budget of just $26 million). And with such a successful cult, it’s really only a matter of time before we get a modernization one day. “The War of the Roses” is no exception. But while the original is still highly entertaining today, thanks in no small part to its wonderfully annoying stars, those involved with the remake are now keen to see the new version:
“Doctor Strange” Benedict Cumberbatch and Oscar winner Olivia Colman (“The Favorite”) follows in the footsteps of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as they take on the lead roles in the reboot of “War of the Roses.” American trade publications report this unanimously. The two stars will also co-produce the new film adaptation of Warren Adler’s novel of the same name, while Oscar-nominated ‘Poor Things’ author Tony McNamara is preparing a new script based on this original.

And the new “War of the Roses”, which will only be titled “The Roses” in the original (after the 89 version was called “The War Of The Roses”), already has a suitable director. Jay Roach will direct “The Roses” and will hopefully be able to skillfully combine the two sides of his previous work. After initially finding great success in his career with comedies like ‘Austin Powers’ and ‘My Bride, Her Father and I’, he has recently turned to more dramatic material in ‘Trumbo’ and ‘Bombshell’.
