Today for the first time on TV: The funniest (and most imaginative!) action & villain comedy of recent years!

The animated fun “The Gangster Gang” comes from Dreamworks. The Hollywood studio, once co-founded by Steven Spielberg, has brought us hugely successful projects such as the series “Shrek”, “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda”. Of course the bar was high.

So to be on the safe side, I went to the cinema with fairly low expectations. However, I was very positively surprised by debutant director Pierre Perifel and his screenwriter Etan Cohen (“Madagascar 2”, “Men In Black 3”). Not only is the combination of characters wonderfully absurd, but there is also a lot to laugh and admire thanks to the countless brilliant jokes, imaginative and crazy action and great animation. Even after repeat viewings, I’m still excited and I’m sure most of you will enjoy this fast-paced villain adventure as well.

“The Gangster Gang” airs today, March 30, 2024 at 8:15 PM on Saturday 1. There will be a repeat on March 31 at 2:15 PM – even little animation fans can get excited without closing their eyes in between. Alternatively, you can currently download the FSK 6 title at no extra cost as part of your flatrate subscription Amazon Prime Video*Look. It is also available in the same location as Blu-ray, DVD and paid video on demand:

The German voices of the main characters are prominent. Including Sebastian Bezzel, the title star of the crime novels ‘Eberhofer’, the popular ‘LOL’ candidates Max Giermann and Kurt Kröhmer, Jannis Niewöhner (‘The Collini Case’), Joyce Ilg (‘Blockbustaz’), Fynn Kliemann (“The Houseboat”) and Gisa Flake from “Polizeiruf 110” on the synchronous microphones.

“The Gangster Gang” on Saturday 1: that’s the story

Mr. Wolf (Bezzel), Mr. Snake (Krömer), Mr. Shark (Kliemann), Mr. Piranha (Niewöhner) and Mrs. Tarantula (Ilg) are a feared gang of thieves. Half the city trembles before them, because no art gallery, no jeweler, no museum and certainly no private safe seems safe from these criminals.

However, at some point they overestimate their own smarts and become careless. Then police officer Misty Luggins (Flake) snaps and the five risk an extremely long prison sentence. But then the crooks receive an offer: under the leadership of Prof. Marmalade (Giermann), they must switch sides and do good things from now on.

Leader, Mr. Wolf, immediately agrees on their behalf, but is already planning the next coup. To their own surprise, the five really enjoy their initially fake good deeds and now consider actually becoming honest. Not a bad idea, because shortly afterwards a dangerous villain starts to threaten the entire region…

On power

You can now look further!

Not only the German voice cast is attractively cast. If you watch the film on Amazon Prime Video or one of the haptic display media, you can switch to the original English sound. You will hear well-known speakers such as Oscar winner Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Marvel stars Awkwafina (“Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings”) and Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool 2”), comedians Marc Mahon (“GLOW”), Craig Robinson (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and Richard Ayoade (“The IT Crowd”) as well as Anthony Ramos (“Transformers 7”) and Alex Borstein of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

If, like me, you’re really hoping for further adventures from the animal anti-heroes after enjoying “The Gangster Gang,” then we have two good news for you: first, a sequel is already in the works. Current plans call for “The Gangster Gang 2” to hit U.S. theaters on August 1, 2025 – again with Perifel in the director’s chair and the same speakers. Secondly, you can continue watching the first film immediately afterwards.

In late November 2023, “The Gangster Gang: Villainous Christmas,” a holiday special, debuted exclusively on the Netflix streaming service’s schedule. It’s a half-hour prequel to the big screen hit, featuring the group during a Christmas-themed raid that gets pretty out of hand. Unfortunately, both the German and the original voices are different and the animations do not quite reach the high level of the cinema adventure. The whole thing still puts you in a good mood – even at Easter!
