Fresh herbs are healthy and can be grown at home.

Herbs add a special flavor to pizza, pasta or salad dressings, as well as popular smoothies. For preparation, preferably fresh greens are used. This is healthier and the herbs are more aromatic.

If you don’t have a garden, you don’t have to go without fresh herbs even in winter. For a small herb garden of your own in the apartment, a sunny and bright place such as a window sill is sufficient. Important: There should be no heaters under the grass.

Whether in small pots, decorative terracotta pots, paper bags, woven baskets or wooden boxes, fresh herbs are a fragrant and decorative eye-catcher in the kitchen or living room.

Choose the right location

Herbs such as thyme, basil, dill, thyme, chives, parsley, mint, lemon balm or cress are very suitable for growing on the windowsill. This requires nutrient-rich planting soil, suitable plant containers and seeds from the garden centre. The latter are planted according to the package instructions and placed in a suitable, bright place in the apartment.

Herbs in your own garden are very healthy

Location and room temperature may vary depending on the plant. For example, not all herbs like direct sunlight. The soil should always be kept moist, but in no case waterlogged. After about two weeks some of the young plants will already be visible. If you have planted it very often, you need to plant it after about a month. Herbs also need organic fertilizer every few weeks. For example, egg shells or coffee grounds are suitable for this.

“Do it yourself” for kids and beginners

For example, planting cress is easy. All you need are seeds, a flat bowl and cotton wool. The bowl is covered with cotton, seeds are sprinkled on it and then watered with water. Add some water every day, the sprouts will sprout after a few days.

After about five days, the desired amount of cress can be cut with scissors. Seasoned with a little herb salt and a little pepper, on cream cheese bread or crackers, your own cress harvest makes a healthy snack bread for kids.

Buy herbs in pots

If planting herbs is too troublesome for you, you can also buy ready-made edible herbs such as chives, parsley and basil in pots. It is recommended to go organic.

The lifespan of supermarket herbs is more modest. Usually planted tightly in small pots, they eat and take important nutrients from each other. If they are divided into two or three into large enough pots, their lifespan may be slightly extended.
