Wild garlic sausage, wild garlic cheese or simply a delicious salad flavored with wild garlic – all this will delight gourmets at the beginning of the season. But be careful! Wild garlic leaves resemble the leaves of poisonous autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) A deceptive similarity: While the leaves of wild garlic are stalked and elliptical and emit a characteristic garlic odor, the leaves of autumn crocus are stemless, lance-shaped and odorless.

How do you tell wild garlic from lily of the valley and autumn crocus?

  • Wild garlic season is from early March to mid-May.
  • Wild garlic begins to bloom in early May.
  • Wild garlic can easily be confused with lily of the valley or autumn crocus.

  • Rule of thumb: Wild garlic leaves smell like garlic when crushed, while lily of the valley and autumn crocus leaves do not.

  • Wild garlic has a dull underside, while lily of the valley has a glossy leaf. Both the underside and the upper part of the autumn crocus leaf are shiny.

  • There is only one variety of wild garlic leaves that grows from the ground.

Unlike edible wild garlic, autumn crocus contains a strong poison. This leads to severe poisoning symptoms after just a few leaves are consumed. (SDA)
