“My husband is a real jerk to me in front of our friends!”

My husband and I spend a lot of time with our mutual friends, but lately I’ve been feeling more and more uncomfortable about it. It seems like he has to constantly make me look stupid in front of our friends by pretending to be smarter and funnier.

I have a better school qualification than him and I know I’m intelligent, that’s not the point. Lately it seems like he has to be louder at the table than me and present his opinions as superior. He often only disagrees with me on principle, even if he doesn’t explain why he has the opposite opinion. While I say something like: ‘No, I find that boring.’ When I ask why, he sometimes even pretends not to hear me. Right asi!

He often even takes my ideas and presents them as his own to get a laugh. When I ask him about it, he brushes it off and says it’s just fun and that I shouldn’t take it so seriously. After all, we were drinking with friends, and he couldn’t remember exactly what he had said that was wrong. He basically acts like I’m the dumb one who can’t take a joke. He really acts like an asshole! And I’ve also seen the irritated looks on our friends’ faces when they make a statement or two.

It hurts me that he constantly tries to belittle me in front of our friends.

I’ve tried to talk to him about it, but he doesn’t take it seriously. What should I do? How can I make it clear to him that his behavior is unacceptable and hurts my feelings? I would be grateful for any advice.

Do I really need to round up our friends and tell him he’s acting like a jerk?
