An artificial intelligence model was able to predict 72 percent of Alzheimer’s diseases.

Artificial intelligence is finding a place in more and more fields. Technology is proving to be a particularly useful aid in healthcare.

PhD student Alice Tang researches Alzheimer’s disease at UC San Francisco in California. She wanted to investigate whether artificial intelligence could help detect diseases. To do this, it used an artificial intelligence model to analyze health data from five million people. Idea: Using machine learning, AI should be able to recognize patterns and therefore predict Alzheimer’s disease.

The results of the research are impressive. The model was able to detect the disease early in 72 percent of patients who later developed Alzheimer’s disease. In some cases, AI has been able to diagnose a disease seven years before the first symptoms.

AI was able to detect Alzheimer’s because several other diseases were associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s. For example, men and women with high blood pressure and vitamin D deficiency are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
