Even after the series ends, many fans’ love for the weird nerds from “The Big Bang Theory” remains unbroken. What was particularly popular with many viewers was the interaction between the eccentric Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons, and his girlfriend Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik). But a scene together presented the actor with a very special challenge.
In the tenth episode of the sixth season, called ‘Punishment Must Be’, there is an unusual moment between the two characters: To punish Amy for lying, Sheldon puts his girlfriend over his knee and spanks her. What he actually intended as a questionable disciplinary measure met with surprising approval from Amy, who was extremely pleased with this infamous form of punishment.
However, filming this scene became a real challenge for Jim Parsons…
Jim Parsons couldn’t help but laugh
Because unlike his role, which carried out this punishment with ruthless severity, Parsons found this film adaptation incredibly funny, he said in an interview. The Paley Center for Media carried out:
“It was, I would say, one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, because I found it extremely funny.“
In a Conversation With late night host Conan O’Brian he spoke again about the difficulties during filming:
“We had to do one take at a time because I was laughing constantly, which is rare for me.”
The plan was actually to have the scene in question only take place off-screen. That certainly would have made filming easier, but many viewers would have been happy that they ultimately decided to capture this quirky and highly entertaining moment between Sheldon and Amy on camera, as it is definitely one of the standout scenes from the sitcom’s sixth season.
By the way, Jim Parsons also almost got a role in the legendary series ‘How I Met Your Mother’. You can read here why nothing came of it:
