More than thirty recruits in the canton of Bern fell ill with the flu

More than 30 Swiss Army recruits fell ill with gastrointestinal flu at the Thun BE and Jassbach BE military bases. Those affected are isolated and are being cared for by specialized staff.

Trainees from Panzerschule 21, the Panzer/Artillery Officers’ School 22 and the Maintenance School 43 in Thun and the Electronic Operations School 64 in Jassbach are affected, as the Federal Ministry of Defense, Civil Protection and Sports (DDBS) announced on Thursday.

The visiting days planned for next Saturday to various companies of the affected army schools have been cancelled. The army medical service is monitoring developments on the ground and, if necessary, will take further measures in consultation with the responsible commanders.

Stomach flu (gastroenteritis) usually develops within 48 hours with nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Bacteria or viruses are usually responsible for gastrointestinal infections. Gastrointestinal infections often clear up on their own within a few days with an easily digestible diet. (sda/lyn)
