Petrus is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding Bordeaux wines ever made. It is made exclusively from Merlot grapes grown on almost eleven hectares in the Pomerol region of Bordeaux. The vineyards lie on a hill with the descriptive name La Boutonnière Pétrus and are characterized by characteristic bluish clay soil.
Approximately half of the valuable wines are matured in new oak barrels. To keep the impact of wood on the wine as low as possible, new barrels are cleaned with hot steam before filling and then filled with water for approximately two weeks. By the way, noble red wines are called simply Petrus and not Château Petrus, but this is often misread.

Our Blick reader can count himself lucky to own two well-preserved bottles of this red wine. Its only drawback is the relatively poor Bordeaux vintage 1981, which is far behind the 1982 and 1983 in terms of quality. Retired American wine critic Robert Parker (76) tasted the wine twice and gave it a modest 86 points out of 100 possible points. For Neal Martin (53), it was 80 and 88 points, respectively, so they were pretty moderate.
Unfortunately, regular 0.75 liter bottles are well past the optimum drinking range; larger formats may still be a surprise. Still, Urs Käser’s bottles are of considerable value. Prices for two bottles in the current world market start from around 1,700 or 3,400 francs, depending on the condition of the bottle.
