Czech State Railways Ceske Drahy (CD) has announced details of its new night train connection from Prague via Basel to Zurich. The connection will be presented under the new brand “CD Night,” a spokesperson said in Prague on Wednesday.
The route goes via Usti nad Labem (Aussig an der Elbe), Frankfurt am Main and Freiburg im Breisgau. It is offered together with the foreign partner railways ÖBB, SBB and DB. The train is named after Canopus, the brightest star in the ship’s constellation Kiel. The new connection will come into effect with the timetable change in December.
“We want to give a new impulse to night train traffic,” said CD CEO Michal Krapinec. As before, there will be further CD-Night connections from Prague to Warsaw or from Prague via Innsbruck to Zurich. The state-owned company is currently investing the equivalent of ten million euros in modernizing its sleeper and couchette cars. These include new LED lighting, new beds, sockets for charging mobile phones and internet access via a WLAN network. The bad news for travelers: Fares for Czech state railways will rise by 15 percent from mid-December. (saw/sda/awp/dpa)
