Has Steven Spielberg convinced ‘the world’s greatest actor’ to make a comeback? Now there is finally an answer

Has Steven Spielberg convinced ‘the world’s greatest actor’ to make a comeback? Now there is finally an answer

It got a lot of fans excited. Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who actually lives in Ireland and is very reclusive, was spotted with directing legend Steven Spielberg in New York in January. They were sitting together in a restaurant with director Jim Sheridan. Speculation spread quickly: Has Spielberg the actor who was released in 2017 after ‘The silk thread“ended his career, persuaded him to make a comeback? After all, that seemed to fit, just a few weeks earlier, during one of his rare public appearances at an awards ceremony for Martin Scorsese, Day-Lewis had indicated that the right project could lure him back in front of the camera.

And who better to do that than Spielberg, who directed the rare actor in his penultimate film appearance no less than five years before ‘The Silk Thread’: in ‘Lincoln’! But the meeting was not about a comeback. The third participant in the discussion group made this clear when he was asked about it in several interviews.

A Kennedy biopic – but with Day-Lewis behind the camera at most

Jim Sheridan, who directed Day-Lewis in the masterpieces My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father and The Boxer (more times than any other filmmaker), revealed , that he would like to make another film with Day-Lewis. He also communicates with him regularly, but he does The mime clearly told him that he was done with acting.

So what was the meeting about? Sheridan revealed that he is toying with the idea of reviving a previously planned project about Joseph Kennedy. The patriarch of the Kennedy clan was born in the US to Irish immigrants and pursued wealth and power from an early age – even through means that were not entirely permissible. He eventually married the daughter of the mayor of Boston. The marriage produced nine children, including future American President John F. Kennedy…

But he doesn’t want Day-Lewis to get the lead role. The actor is probably too old for that now, while that was probably still in the cards when there were earlier ideas to get the project off the ground. The retired actor is not allowed to take on any other role in front of the camera. There were only discussions about whether Day-Lewis could take on an executive producer role on the project. Not anymore. And it’s not even a real project yet, there are just loose discussions.

Daniel Day-Lewis: “The best actor in the world”!

So movie fans will have to bury their hopes that Daniel Day-Lewis will return in front of the camera – which is of course a shame. By the way, the cultural broadcaster ARTE recently published (perhaps also because of the rumors circulating) the interesting documentary ‘Daniel Day-Lewis: The Path to Becoming the World’s Best Actor’, which can also be viewed directly on YouTube for free.

It also goes into detail about how Day-Lewis throws himself into each role, earning him an Oscar record and the reputation of the world’s best actor. Because Daniel Day-Lewis is the only man to win three Best Actor Oscars. The first was for “My left foot“, others followed for “There Will Be Blood” and “Lincoln“. This is especially impressive because Day-Lewis has appeared in so few films. From the 1990s onwards he was only seen in a few selected projects and occasionally withdrew for extended periods of time.

But that also gives his many fans hope that a comeback can one day happen. After all, he was so burned out after the extremely physically demanding work on ‘The Boxer’ that he announced that he was giving up acting… until Martin Scorsese persuaded him to make a comeback five years later for ‘Gangs Of New York’.

With three awards for best actor, Daniel Day-Lewis is, as I said, the record holder. This year, three of his colleagues are preparing to take a step with their first victory and perhaps surpass it at some point. Who do you think deserves this? Bradley Cooper? Colman Domingo? Paul Giamatti? Jeffery Wright? Or perhaps the big favorite Cillian Murphy? On https://community-voting.de/ you can vote now.
