Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to remind yourself how good it is for you as a film lover these days: you now become impatient when productions take longer than six months to find their way to local cinemas after their American premiere. Such a wait was once considered short and brief. A truly extreme case that proves this is the witch horror “The Daughters of Satan”:
The occult genre film starring Tom Selleck premiered in the US on September 27, 1972. In Germany it was first shown on October 5, 1994 (!) – on commercial television. In between, Selleck was almost cast as Indiana Jones and became a TV crime superstar with a cult following thanks to “Magnum.” And first “The Daughters of Satan” has been available on Blu-ray in German home theaters since this week!

So six years after its German DVD premiere, the horror film FSK-18 has finally made the jump from SD quality to HD quality. Compared to the waiting time between American cinema and German television, this is actually barely more than a short jump!
To celebrate this, “The Daughters of Satan” will also receive one DVD reissue*. This is based on the new image master created specifically for Blu-ray evaluation.
“The Daughters of Satan”: Art dealer Tom Selleck and the reincarnated witches
The Philippines: Art dealer James Robertson (Tom Selleck) discovers a photo of a witch being burned in an antique shop. He feels almost magically drawn to the painting, not least because the witch in the photo bears a striking resemblance to his wife Chris (Barra Grant). So he buys the painting with the intention of giving it to her. However, she is outraged by the souvenir, but eventually Chris becomes fascinated by it. Chris soon becomes obsessed and plans to kill her husband along with two reincarnated witches. He is the descendant of a once tireless witch hunter – revenge is needed!
After his breakthrough, Tom Selleck refrained from making any negative statements about this horror film, in which he already has his iconic mustache and radiates huge, premature ‘Magnum’ vibes thanks to the setting. However, when asked about ‘The Daughters of Satan’, he also had short, warm words for the film: According to Selleck, it would have certainly been fun to film!
This is certainly not a euphoric review, but acting stars have also made many disparaging comments about their horror movie sins from less glorious days. For fans of obscure horror titles with a strange atmosphere, this is like critical acclaim – and Tom Selleck fans with a yearning for completion can certainly get surprised looks from their loved ones with “The Daughters of Satan.”!
