Check in, sleep, check out: Staying in a hotel room is no longer so easy everywhere. The latest trend is called the “smart health room,” a concept developed by Swiss start-up Virtusan. Virtusan founder Li Wu explained the idea recently at the Global Health Summit in Miami: “Imagine your future smart room taking care of your entire health.”

Li Wu’s company launched the offering two years ago with a health app developed by leading US scientists whose content is based on the four cornerstones of sleep, nutrition, and mental and physical health. Now Virtusan is expanding its product range based on this. The Swiss company has already taken the first step towards healthy hotel stays by collaborating with the well-known Maybourne Hotel Group. The group owns luxury hotels in Great Britain and the United States, including the “Berkeley” and “Emory” in London.

Sounds, lights and smells for your health

The first Virtusan health rooms have now been established in the British metropolis. “Our goal is to improve the traditional guest experience in the hotel industry,” adds Virtusan CEO Nenád Diczkov. “Guests should not only enjoy luxury, but also benefit from increased physical, mental and emotional well-being.”

Based on scientific findings, Virtusan experts worked with architects to develop feel-good concepts that integrate seamlessly into rooms. Specifically, the respective suites offer a comprehensive health and wellness program to combat stress and improve performance, as well as a completely new way to use integrative technology in the room: lighting is adjusted to simulate daylight and optionally scents and accessories for better performance. surround sounds are provided. concentration or greater relaxation (see box below). Guests are also offered appropriate nutritional supplements.

Of course, sleep is not neglected in this room. Virtusan implements guided programs based on key elements of sleep health, such as sleep duration, sleep quality or sleep environment. For this purpose, findings from the science of so-called circadian rhythms are used – this is essentially our “internal clock”.

Better health for seniors

According to Diczkov, Virtusan plans to use this system in other areas in the future; as a turnkey experience and technology integration for different rooms. “We are thinking of schools, hospitals and nursing homes.”

Virtusan CEO explains his motivation for getting involved specifically in the senior care field: “The aging process is associated with physiological changes, cognitive changes and a wide range of health needs. This requires a nuanced understanding and specific solutions to improve the quality of life of the aging population.” In particular, the aim is, among other things, to promote the mobility of older people and strengthen their emotional resilience. In short: “We want to ensure that technology and the environment take care of us as humans,” says Diczkov.

Since its establishment, Virtusan has been striving to integrate permanent methods into people’s lives, whether through digital or physical tools, and to encourage life-extending habits. Founder Li Wu: “Integrating our protocols into physical spaces such as luxury hotels and aged care through technology is a natural evolution. In this way, we create an ideal environment to promote longevity and facilitate behavior change through guided automation that goes beyond a digital tool.” This is the next step in wellness technology that Virtusan hopes to eventually adapt to broader commercial availability and bring into everyone’s lives.
