The creators of Chatbot ChatGPT want to bring their artificial intelligence software to robots. The start-up figure wants to use OpenAI to develop new artificial intelligence models for its machines that walk upright and can already perform complex hand movements. In January, Figure reached an agreement with BMW to supply robots for future use in automobile production in the US state of South Carolina.

OpenAI’s artificial intelligence software is trained using large amounts of data. Figure recently showed in a video how one of the company’s robot prototypes brews a cup of coffee using a capsule machine. This includes fine movements such as grasping the capsule and inserting it into the device. According to Figure, the robot learned this in ten hours.

Many manufacturers participated

The Silicon Valley robotics company also announced a $675 million funding round on Thursday. The total value of the figure was $2.6 billion. Donors include the OpenAI startup fund as well as chip companies Nvidia and Intel, as well as Microsoft and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Boston Dynamics, a company now owned by South Korean automaker Hyundai, has been working on humanoid robots for many years. Technology billionaire Elon Musk also owns an upright walking robot called Optimus, developed by Tesla, the electric car manufacturer he runs.

Figure wants to bring its robots to commercial use as soon as possible, company boss Brett Adcock said on Thursday. Former employees of Boston Dynamics and Tesla are also actively involved in the company. (SDA)
