A large contingent of street sweeping staff has been on the road in Basel since Monday morning for Carnival. By Wednesday morning, 280 street sweepers had collected 190 tons of carnival waste with the help of 70 vehicles.
That is slightly more than last year, the construction and transport department of the canton of Basel-Stadt announced on Wednesday afternoon. She attributed this to the rain that fell over Basel after the Morgestraich. During dry weather, the collected waste is lighter than during rain.
According to the announcement, the streets of Basel will be roughly cleaned every evening after the Cortège and on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 4 a.m. This should make regulated tram and road traffic possible.
The construction and transport department announced that the “Ändstraich” would be followed on Thursday at 4 a.m. by “the annual major event”, the “Ändreinigung”. The coarser waste is loaded directly into garbage trucks. The “Räppli” swept 140 windshield wipers into the ditches, where they were collected by mops. Then flood trucks would forcefully wash the streets and squares with water. Finally, the doles and mud collectors should also be freed from the “Räppli”.
