Confirmed: ‘Lost’ Creator Makes Secret New ‘Star Wars’ Movie – With a Marvel Director

Disney and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has recently focused on expanding the galaxy far, far into the series area when it comes to “Star Wars”. Several projects have already started here (for example, the “Rogue One” prequel “Andor” is currently running on Disney+), and many others are actively being worked on. The cinematic future of the mega franchise, meanwhile, isn’t nearly as concrete.

With the controversial sequel trilogy ending in 2019, it’s still unclear exactly how Star Wars will continue on the big screen, though several films have been promised since then, including a new Star Wars 8 trilogy. Creator Rian Johnson, a Rogue Squadron- film from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, or original projects from Taika Waititi, creator of Thor 3 & 4 and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige. And now there’s even another potential cinematic adventure:

Lost co-creators and creators of Watchmen Damon Lindelof writing a new Star Wars movie. The industry magazine reports , after similar rumors circulated more than half a year ago. However, not much more is known about the project than it was then, so it’s still completely unclear what it should be about.

What is new, however, is that Lindelof will not write the space adventure alone (although it is not known who his writing partner is) and that with Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy a director who is now increasingly in demand in Hollywood is on board. The Pakistani filmmaker won two Oscars (for her short documentaries Saving Face and A Girl In The River) and also directed two episodes of the MCU series Ms. Marvel” performed. She is also currently planning to launch the long-planned sci-fi thriller Brilliance starring Will Smith.

Lindelof knows his way around angry fans

Damon Lindelof also has to be thick-skinned to expose himself to the often harsh reactions and even open hostilities of “Star Wars” fans against new projects in the franchise (which in the recent past notably featured Rian Johnson for ” Star Wars 8″ felt). Lindelof already faced a huge fan protest for the much-discussed finale of the mystery hit “Lost”, for which he was mainly responsible. And his collaboration on the “Alien” prequel “Prometheus” and the “Star Trek” reboot sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness” had many a fan on the barricades.

Since then, however, the three-time Emmy winner has made two celebrated TV hits with “The Leftovers” and “Watchmen,” which have also rehabilitated him in the eyes of many critical series viewers.

What’s next for “Star Wars” in the cinema?

It has long been said that the next “Star Wars” movie will be released in December 2023. It is still up in the air whether that will remain the case and if so, which film exactly awaits us. For a long time, “Rogue Squadron” more or less starred here, but after delays due to alleged creative differences between Lucasfilm and director Patty Jenkins, it finally looked like Taika Waititi’s film would be the preferred choice. But it would also be conceivable that the Lindelof project is now making rapid progress, having immediately hired a much sought-after director to be actively involved in the development of the story.

If Disney wants to stick with the theatrical release in late 2023, more information should be here soon. However, given that it is slowly becoming difficult to stick to the current schedule (the next “Star Wars” films are scheduled for 2025 and 2027), a further delay cannot be ruled out. In general, Kathleen Kennedy’s strategy is to have many different ideas and story concepts developed at the same time, which explains the frequent reports of several new “Star Wars” movies in recent years, about which there are almost no details. Some of these projects we will probably never see, others will change form significantly.
