No longer indexed after more than 30 years: splash a horror film in the wake of “Tanz der Teufel” before the uncut comeback?

With “Dance of the Devils” (original title: “The Evil Dead”), cult director Sam Raimi created a horror classic for eternity – which he continued extremely successfully not only with “Dance of the Devils II” and “Army of Darkness”. . With “Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead Rise” and the series “Ash Vs. Evil Dead,” the forest cabin horror film that was once produced for little money finally became a cross-generational phenomenon of fantastic cinema. But the success of the series attracted countless copycats decades ago:

Dance of the demons‘ is considered one of the most famous rip-offs of Raimi’s low-budget landmark – and as such is best known in this country, where the 1990 film internationally known as “Demon Wind” was placed directly in the vein of “Dance of the Devils” with the help of a German translation.

Well, one thing straight away: the film can’t keep up with its great role model (of course). So if you’ve never heard of “Dance of the Demons,” don’t worry: you haven’t missed a milestone in horror cinema! But if you are completely addicted to the hellish carnage orgies of Bruce Campbell aka Ash and are always looking for similar horror stories, then the film is definitely for you. And then the latest news about the forgotten cult film is all the more pleasant for you…

Dance of the Demons has been deindexed

How first reported, the film has now been prematurely removed from the BzKJ list and is therefore no longer considered harmful to young people – although strictly speaking this concerns the former VHS edition from the early 1990s, the uncut DVD from 2016 and an English-language videocassette. After all, it is not films or film versions per se that are indexed, but specific media.

After the traditional re-examination after 25 years led to a subsequent indexing in 2015, the film is now actually being rehabilitated almost ten years later. There are currently no further details about a possible new edition in home theater. However, it is quite conceivable that the film will now be submitted to the FSK – and then perhaps not even from 18, but even from 16 years old. Considering how viewing habits have changed over the past thirty years, “Dance of the Demons” is relatively harmless despite its copious bloodshed.

This is the rip-off of “Dance of the Devils”.

‘Dance of the Demons’ is the directorial debut of Charles Philip Moore (‘Blackbelt’) and tells the story of Cory (Eris Larson), who returns with friends to his hometown, where his grandparents once died, after the mysterious suicide of his father. in a mysterious massacre – and now explores the origins of horror…

A remote house where a young man and his entourage face a supernatural threat? That sounds a lot like “Dance of the Devils”. But the parallels don’t end there. Because ‘Dance of the Demons’ will mainly be remembered as a wonderfully crazy splatter film – which was of course made with limited resources, but also with a lot of love for muddy special effects. which positions the film, at least in terms of splashes, somewhere between (the much better) “Dance of the Devils” and (the even better!) “Dance of the Devils II”. Even if it doesn’t have much else to offer, gorehounds can at least take a look here.
