Today on TV: Sci-Fi disaster action for trash fans with two of your favorite TV stars from the 80s and 90s

“Apocalypse Earth,” as you notice from the sci-fi actor’s first few minutes, is a real waste product. The story, the dialogues, the special effects, the staging and the acting of the vast majority of the actors come from lower drawers. You have been warned here.

But maybe you would like to do such an often unintentionally funny work tonight? With a few cold drinks, a huge bowl of savory cookies and, if possible, a few cheerful like-minded people, such a spectacle can really put you in a good mood.

So if you want to take the risk: “Apocalypse Earth” will be broadcast today, January 26, 2024, at 8:15 PM on Tele 5. The channel will show a repeat on January 27 at 11:55 PM. Alternatively, the FSK-12 title is available as (3D) Blu-ray, DVD or paid video-on-demand from popular online retailers:

If you’re an Amazon Prime customer, you can watch the film there too free streaming*. All you have to do is register for the seven-day free trial of the Netzkino Select channel. If you do not want to cancel again, you will pay 3.99 euros per month after the trial period.

“Apocalypse Earth” is a mockbuster!

“Apocalypse Earth” was directed and written by Thunder Levin, the author of the first four volumes of the “Sharknado” series. This information should make it clear to you what kind of film awaits you here. The film’s home studio is the infamous waste mill The Asylum. The Californian company specializes in producing so-called mockbusters.

When one of the major Hollywood studios announces a blockbuster, The Asylum usually tries to produce a cheap rip-off of it with a title that’s as similar as possible and a plot premise that’s at least vaguely in the same vein. It will then be released on DVD or video-on-demand around the same time as the theatrical release of the original. The Asylum’s apparently not entirely unfounded hope is that one or two inexperienced film fans, who think they are dealing with the glossy production, will then buy their cheap copy. In this case, the template for “Apocalypse Earth” was the M. Night Shyamalan-directed “After Earth” starring Will Smith. However, the whole thing also unashamedly uses elements from ‘Planet of the Apes’, ‘Avatar’, ‘Predator’, ‘King Kong’ and ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’, among others.

For the filming of such mockbusters, one or two stars from the past are hired in addition to unknown actors, whose names are then printed prominently on the posters and covers. ‘Apocalypse Earth’ is about Adrian Paul and Richard Grieco, who were once big in the TV world. The latter became a teen idol in the late 1980s alongside Johnny Depp in the popular crime series ’21 Jump Street’. Grieco’s British colleague, on the other hand, celebrated his greatest success as the title character of the fantasy action series “Highlander”, which continued the cinema franchise of the same name for six successful seasons, from 1992 to 1998.

“Apocalypse Earth” on Tele 5: that’s the story

In the not-too-distant future, Earth is attacked by extremely aggressive aliens with vastly superior weapons. The people are defeated within a very short time and there is a danger of complete extinction. A select group boards a spaceship to start a new life on a distant planet.

Before the journey, the passengers are put into a cold sleep. When they wake up again, their vehicle has crashed in a world unknown to them. The survivors are barely familiar with their situation as they are exposed to attacks from invisible natives and enormous beetles. But these should not be the last unpleasant surprises that await you here…
