The ex-wife of British Prince Andrew, Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson (64), has been diagnosed with cancer again. After the Duchess of York was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer in the summer, she has now been diagnosed with skin cancer, her spokesperson told the British news agency PA and other media on Sunday evening. Her dermatologist had several moles removed and examined when she underwent reconstructive surgery after her mastectomy (removal of breast tissue). “And one of them was identified as having cancer,” the statement said.
She is undergoing further tests to ensure the disease is caught at an early stage. “Of course a new diagnosis so soon after breast cancer treatment is shocking, but the Duchess remains cheerful.”
Within a few days it is the third news of an illness among the royal family. Last week it was announced that Princess Kate would be out for an extended period of time due to abdominal surgery. King Charles III must be treated in hospital for an enlarged prostate.
Ferguson was previously married to Charles’ brother Andrew. At Christmas she unexpectedly attended the royal family’s joint service at the Sandringham estate in eastern England.
She wanted to thank the entire medical team, especially her dermatologist, whose vigilance ensured the disease was discovered, said the statement, which was quoted by PA and other media. She believes her experience highlights the importance of checking the size, shape, color and texture, as well as the appearance of new moles. (sda/dpa)
