Over the course of his work, Zack Snyder has built a loyal fan base, some of whom celebrate the director in an almost cult-like manner and continue to see great art even in his less successful works (the most recent example, “Rebel Moon ”). But even the biggest critics have to say one thing to the filmmaker: He has shaped the comic film genre like no other – both narratively and visually.
His adaptation of Alan Moore’s cult work ‘Watchmen’ or the bloody and overly stylish production of Frank Miller’s battle record ‘300’ are still among the most exciting films in the genre that every film lover should see.
On the occasion of the streaming start of ‘Rebel Moon’ on Netflix, Zack Snyder revealed in an interview with that he had planned another comic book hit that would make even a dark ham like “Watchmen” look like a children’s movie. This is a sequel to “300”, which would have been titled “Blood and Ashes”.
Blood, violence and lots of sex!
However, the sequel to his Sparta action game “300” does not (logically) continue the bloody massacre plot. Instead, another story from this world is told. ‘Blood and Ashes’ is said to have been a homoerotic story about Alexander the Great and his deputy Hephaestion. But decision makers at Warner seemed to have no interest in the project as it was reportedly extremely dark, bloody and violent.
However, in the interview, the director revealed that he has since reacquired the rights to the project:
“We have the rights back, so we can do it if we want to. I don’t know what the market is like for an incredibly homoerotic, super brutal, super sexual movie.[…] No one wanted to do it, it was too weird. We really tried.”
So fans can hope. Perhaps after the prequel “300: Rise Of An Empire”, which was somewhat entertaining but never achieved the power and visual brilliance of its predecessor, there will be another completely successful return to antiquity.
