“House Of The Dragon”: The Great Dragon Overview – Which Targaryens and Velaryons are going to the Season Finale with Dragons?

The season finale is just around the corner: on Monday, October 24, 2022, the first season of “Game Of Thrones: House Of The Dragon” will end with episode 10. In the episode titled “The Black Queen”, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) is cast as Queen crowned on Dragonstone – this is evident from the trailer for Episode 10. And after Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) was crowned in Episode 9, Westeros has a problem: there can only be one person on the Iron Throne…

So now the civil war called “Dance of the Dragons” will break out. And because they are Targaryens, Rhaenyra, Aegon and Co. each other not only with weapons, but also with dragons. But which dragons from the “Game Of Thrones” universe are involved in season 1? Are all the Targaryens and Velaryons in the series Dragon Riders yet – or is there anyone else without a winged pangolin?

The dragons at a glance

Syrax – Rider is Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy): Syrax is a yellow-scaled female dragon named after a Valyrian goddess. In season 1, she laid three eggs.

Caraxes – Rider is Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith): Caraxes is also called “bloodworm”. It owes this to its slender, elongated shape and red scales. His unbridled temperament is no different from that of his rider.

Seasmoke – Rider was Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan): Laenor and his light gray dragon Seasmoke came to the rescue of Daemon Targaryen when he fought alone against the Crab Feeder’s army. After the “death” of Laenor, the dragon is without a rider for the time being.

Meleys – Rider is Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best): With the female dragon with red scales and pink wings, Princess Rhaenys made a grand entrance into the dragon pit during Aegon’s coronation.

Vhagar – Rider was Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell), currently it is Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell): Vhagar is the largest of the dragons that lived during the House Of The Dragon period. After his rider Laena ordered him to burn her, Aemond became Vhagar’s new rider.

Vermax – Rider is Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collette): Vermax hatched from an egg given to Jacaerys at birth and evolved into a large dragon that does not tolerate cold well. We saw him as a boy in the dragon den.

Dreamfyre / Dreamfire – Rider is Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban): We may have briefly seen Helaena’s blue-and-silver female dragon in the dragon pit, but not yet with her rider on her back.

Sunfyre – Rider is Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn Carney): Sunfyre has golden scales, which is why Aegon changes the Targaryen decal when crowned. He now wears a gold dragon icon on a black background, while Rhaenyra is still red on black. However, we didn’t see Sunfyre in the first nine episodes.

Episode 10: Arrax and Vermithor

These are the dragons we’ve seen so far – except in the case of Sunfyre, but the dragon played a part in causing Aegon to change his crest. Of course there are still a few missing: Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) we will see on his dragon Arrax in episode 10. And in the season finale, we get to know another dragon: Vermithor, the second largest dragon after Vhagar. The trailer shows Daemon Targaryen approaching him. Daemon already has a dragon, but he will try to win the dragon without a rider for another rider of the black side.

In George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood, sisters Baela (Shani Smethurst) and Rhaena Velaryon (Eva Ossei-Gerning) also, or later become associated with, dragons. Baela joined her dragon female, Moondancer, at an early age. Rhaena later becomes Morning’s dragon rider and only hatches from one of Syrax’s eggs during the Civil War. And also the younger children of Alicent and Rhaenyra, namely Daeron, Aegon III. and Viserys junior we probably won’t see dragons in the season finale.

There’s plenty of dragon action in the House Of The Dragon season finale. Episode 10 comes to Sky on October 24, 2022 at 3 a.m. and WOW (formerly Sky Ticket).
