Office etiquette has become more relaxed today. People don’t always just talk about work; Private topics also find their place in daily conversations with colleagues. For example, you tell your office friends about the consequences of your shopping spree, your son’s illness, or even the stagnation in your love life. After all, you spend a lot of time with your coworkers every day, often even more than with your own family. You grow together and want to share your pain with each other. So, does every issue really belong in the office?
NO! This is shown by a survey conducted by the online portal Statista in cooperation with the opinion research institute YouGov. For the survey, 1035 employees were interviewed in Germany. Read below to find out which topics are taboo for them at work.
Taboo topic 1: Sex and relationships
If you want to express dirty thoughts, it is better not to do it in the office. Because the biggest taboo subject – most agree on this – is sex and eroticism. 63 percent believe erotic conversations have no place in the workplace.
Love and relationships, on the other hand, are viewed more tolerantly by survey respondents: only 24 percent do not want to know anything about them.
Taboo topic 2: gossiping about co-workers
For some, this is a place between the desk and the coffee machine, while others hate gossiping about their friends. No matter which side you belong to, backbiting is bad behavior and, according to the survey, nearly half of employees do not want their voices to be heard.
Taboo topic 3: Personal finance
According to 48 per cent, anyone who has specific issues with their finances should not bring this to the workplace.
Taboo topic 4: Salary
Even if you just want to talk about it so you know you’re in the zone: 34 percent consider salary-related conversations a taboo topic during a coffee break.
Taboo topic 5: Religion
Sensitive topics also include religion. 26 percent do not want to face faith-related questions at work. That’s why it’s better not to even try to convert your office mates.
Taboo topic 6: Dissatisfaction at work
You may actually think that complaining about your job has no place in the workplace. But for 78 percent, it’s okay to complain about work to your office colleagues.
However, if you are planning to change jobs soon or have already resigned, it may be better not to make a big deal about it. This can change the general atmosphere of the team.
Taboo topic 7: Politics
It’s a misconception that politics generally doesn’t belong in the workplace. Only 16 percent find this topic inappropriate in the office.
