Scotland: Skiing in the Cairngorms
Scotland is magic: the landscape, the people, the dialect. You can also ski very well. And taste the whiskey. And all this in a single day.
With a two-hour flight time from the capital Edinburgh, Scotland is an ideal destination for a short trip or even for snow sports. There are five medium-sized ski resorts in Scotland, easily accessible by car from major cities. The Cairngorms mountain range is particularly beautiful with three winter sports hotspots. The town of Braemar is recommended as a base camp, around which you can experience everything Scotland is famous for: charming country castles, cozy tearooms, whiskey distilleries and the Queen’s holiday home, Balmoral Castle.
Let’s go
It’s best to fly direct to Edinburgh. From there you can reach Braemar in about two hours by rental car. We recommend you to have a pleasant journey with sightseeing stops in Stirling and Perth. More travel tips here.

Swabian Alb: snow fun just behind the border
Deep valleys, vast plains, stunning castles: The Swabian Alb in southern Germany is a wonderful holiday destination. Moreover, in winter! The symbol of the Swabian Alb is the Hohenzollern Castle. The ancestral home of the noble family has risen on a witness mountain above the surrounding area for millennia, attracting most visitors to the southern German region. But the quiet low mountain range with its typical karst plateaus stretching for about 200 kilometers from the west of Lake Constance to the northeast has a lot to offer, especially for those who enjoy a relaxed holiday: in summer you can go hiking or cycling here. Visit medieval Villages in the Upper Danube Valley and discover geological features. For example, at the northern tip of the Swabian Alb lies Nördlinger Ries, the world’s best-preserved meteorite crater.
In winter, it’s worth crossing the border to hike or cross-country ski in the snow-covered cultural area. If there is enough snow, more than two dozen cross-country trails are organized. For example, the 17-kilometer-long Gerstetter cross-country ski track north of Ulm is very beautiful. There are also 10 thermal baths to warm up after a day of snow in the geologically active region.
Let’s go
Transportation: Of course, it is possible to reach the region by bus and train, but the most comfortable way is your own vehicle. The journey from Zurich to Hohenzollern Castle takes approximately two hours.

Poland: Skiing near Krakow
Do you want to go skiing in Poland? If you want to combine a few twists and turns with city culture, you will find interesting slopes around Krakow. Poland is not the first place that comes to mind when it comes to skiing. There are beautiful hills for some fun in the snow, especially in the south, on the border with Slovakia. Surely it’s not worth going to Poland just for this reason. The areas are small and open but therefore particularly suitable for families and beginners. The most famous ski resort in Poland is Kasprowy Wierch near the small town of Zakopane.
Here, in addition to skiing or snowboarding on 15 kilometers of tracks, you can also take a romantic ride through the landscape on a horse-drawn sleigh. Krakow, one of the most beautiful cities in Poland, is just 150 kilometers from Zakopane. At least 5,000 houses from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque adorn the historic centre, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After skiing, head to the Kazimierz district, where traditional klezmer sounds and techno rhythms emanate in equal measure from the bars.

Transportation: Switzerland flies from Zurich to Krakow several times a week. More information here.

The beaches of the Côte d’Azur and the snowy worlds of the Alps are just an hour’s drive away. 15 ski areas with a total of 660 kilometers of pistes are spread throughout the section.
