“Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire” has been streaming on Netflix since the end of December, followed by “Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scar Maker” in April 2024. As is known, the project started as a ‘Star Wars’ film , which Zack Snyder presented to Lucasfilm before the company was sold to Disney, but was never made there.
Now, in a conversation with his colleague Louis Leterrier (“Fast & Furious 10”, “The Incredible Hulk”), director Zack Snyder looks back at how his sci-fi fantasy epic “Rebel Moon” came into being – from the original “Star Wars pitch towards the Netflix project, revealing that Netflix was not only very skeptical at first, but rejected the project in horror.
Netflix’s first reaction: “This is crazy!”
When he delivered a 200-page script, those responsible at Netflix were not at all enthusiastic. According to Snyder, they told him, “200 pages long, hmm? Obviously we’re not making a movie from this script, especially not this crazy R-rated thing. You basically made a live-action ‘heavy metal’ adaptation and everyone is naked in it. Thats crazy.”
Only in the conversations afterwards They came up with the solution to simply make two versions of the ‘Rebel Moon’ films. So Snyder shot the version that Netflix wanted for the two previous parts (“Part 1” can now also be streamed), but was immediately given the resources to make extra scenes for his long versions. These then become more of the quoted ‘crazy R-rated thing’ – a reference to the US R-rating for adults.
Long version of “Child of Fire”: not until the summer of 2024
The conversation took place in the context of took place, where filmmakers were always interviewed by a colleague after a cinema screening of their current project. By the way, Zack Snyder also revealed this in the conversation with Louis Leterrier that the R-rated feature-length version of “Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire” will debut on Netflix in summer 2024.
So we will have to be patient for a long time. This will especially disappoint fans who had previously hoped that the feature-length version of the first film would be released sooner “Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scar Maker” opens April 19, 2024 is again available for use in preparation for the second part.
