If you don’t order wine at a restaurant, your wine glasses are usually raised.

When waiters and waitresses ask for a glass of wine after ordering food and guests respond “No,” the prepared wine glasses often disappear from the table in an instant. As a rule, this happens without comment, but occasionally as a guest you’ll feel like the service staff thought your decision not to order wine was great.

It’s a shame because people tend to change their minds, especially when it comes to wine with food. It will be more effective to leave the wine glasses there instead of removing them immediately. Empty glasses don’t look half as elegant as the full glasses on the next table. Also, many dishes only become truly interesting when accompanied by the right wine.

Do not remove wine glasses immediately

Under certain circumstances, an unplanned desire for a glass of wine may arise with the first bite. If the glasses have already been cleaned at this point, the chance of a spontaneous change of heart is reduced. And let’s be honest, the assumption that wine glasses are urgently needed for other tables or that they take up too much space on the table surface is also unlikely.

So, our dear service team, here’s our advice: Leave wine glasses upright, even if guests don’t order wine to begin with. Because who knows, maybe this will change during your visit to the restaurant. Of course, wine glasses should always be raised without hesitation if guests specifically request it.
