“Man flu” really exists!: Sick men are more nostalgic and sensitive

The number of male patients is higher during flu and cold seasons. A mild cold for most women often causes men to prepare a will as well.

Canadian researcher Kyle Sue of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Health Sciences Center believes there is such a thing as male flu. Her theory may sound ridiculous, but Sue is trying to get attention. The decisive factor for his research was that “Man flu” was often mentioned in the context of laughter when men suffered more severely from flu symptoms.

The term “human flu” was even included in the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries. He defines “disease” as “a cold or similar minor illness experienced by a man who exaggerates the severity of the symptoms,” and he does this without scientific evidence.

Analysis of multiple studies as evidence

As part of a meta-study, Sue wanted to find out whether men actually experience more severe flu symptoms and whether there might be an evolutionary reason for this. To do this, She searched for studies on different keywords in various scientific publications and found what she was looking for.

Many of these studies have shown that female mice have a better immune response than male mice. This leads to the hypothesis that sex-linked hormones may play an important role in the effects of influenza. Another study showed that high testosterone levels in men led to a weaker immune response. One theory states that testosterone promotes aggression, but hormones that strengthen the immune response are lost. Another study showed that sick men were more likely to go to the hospital and that fatal consequences of the flu were more likely in men.

Get rid of the flu during the winter

Evaluation of various studies clearly shows different disease progressions for Sue. Her research leads Sue to a surprising conclusion: Current studies show that men are more likely to suffer from colds and flu than women. However, it is important to conduct further studies to confirm his thesis.

Through her work, Sue hopes to improve the treatment and care of men with flu symptoms and raise awareness in the community. Maybe when everyone has the flu, they should get the attention they need to get rid of it as quickly as possible. In any case, it is hoped that women and men will survive the winter as flu-free as possible.
