After “The Snow Company” on Netflix: This ’90s movie tells the same story – and is even better!

With ‘The Snow Company,’ ‘Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom’ creator Juan Antonio Bayona tackled a real-life 1972 plane crash. At that moment, Flight 571 crashed in the heart of the Andes. There was a rugby team on board that was to be taken to Chile. Only 16 of the 45 passengers were rescued alive – ultimately because they had to resort to extreme measures such as cannibalism to survive in the inhospitable place.

We can also definitely recommend the film, albeit with reservations. The official FILMSTARTS review gives it a solid 3 out of 5 possible stars. The conclusion of our author Björn Becher is as follows: “Juan Antonio Bayona and Netflix are once again making a remake of the legendary ‘Wonder of the Andes’ – as a survival drama that is always exciting, but also a bit too tame.”

On power

If you were fascinated by the story and want to hear the gripping story again after ‘The Snow Company’, you may like ‘Alive – Survival!’ from 1993 not to be missed. The deep survival adventure starring Ethan Hawke (“Leave The World Behind”) is really strong – and is currently available for subscription on Magenta TV.

That’s why survival is worth it

With Frank Marshall (“Arachnophobia”), a man has taken the director’s chair for “Survival!”, whose great strength is his experienced genre craftsmanship. The film develops its great strength by conveying the extreme situation largely through a high level of realism and urgency. The physical and psychological hardships of the people trapped in the icy hell are made almost physically tangible at the best moments.

The fact that ‘Survival’ can develop this incredibly captivating effect is thanks to the actors, in addition to the impressive landscape panoramas, the magnificent soundscape and the goosebump score by James Newton Howard. Above all, Ethan Hawke as the impeccable, unassuming everyman is the ideal cast to excite the audience. Fortunately, you won’t find any heroes here; there are only people here who have to cross every border.
