Jon Watts has been the constant behind the current Spider-Man films, as the filmmaker directed all three installments and left his important mark on the trilogy. But whether Watts will return for “Spider-Man 4” seems uncertain at the moment – so far there has been no official confirmation. And Sony may not be so sure anymore: Because as an insider has learned, alternatives are currently being seriously sought…
The insider in question is the usually well-informed industry expert Daniel Richtman (via ). And apparently those in charge at Sony have already considered a good candidate for the director position in “Spider-Man 4”: Drew Goddard.
Drew Goddard: No stranger to the superhero genre
Until now, filmmaker, producer and screenwriter Goddard has mainly appeared through genre productions and is responsible for, among other things, the wonderfully creative ‘Cabin In The Woods’ from 2012. But he is also no stranger to the comic genre. He wrote and served as executive producer of two episodes of the Netflix series ‘Daredevil’.
Drew Goddard would also become the screenwriter and director of the Sony/Marvel film ‘The Sinister Six’, which would be released in theaters in 2016. This would have brought together some of Peter Parker’s most powerful opponents to unite against their arch-enemy. As is known, nothing came of this villainous blockbuster because the Spidey universe centered on Andrew Garfield was canceled and those responsible decided to reboot instead. If you want to know more about the action adventure, in which Spider-Man even rode a T-Rex (!), you can read detailed news on the subject here:
And who knows, maybe Sony will use the opportunity of a director change to finally bring the villainous association Sinister Six to life. Drew Goddard would certainly be the right man for the job given his background.
When will “Spider-Man 4” hit theaters?
Of course, information obtained from insiders should always be treated with a degree of caution. However, it is not unlikely that Sony will want to quickly move forward with production of “Spider-Man 4” after the double strike in Hollywood ends and will ultimately decide on the director’s position. After all, the multiverse adventure “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” released in 2021, was the most successful film in the company’s history – even though the film was released at a time when many people were still staying away from theaters due to Corona.
There is currently little reliable information about the return of the popular wallcrawler. Rumor has it that filming won’t begin until late 2024, which means we probably won’t see “Spider-Man 4” until 2026:
