Glynis Johns of ‘Mary Poppins’ dies at 100

British actress Glynis Johnswho gave life Winifred Banksthe matriarch of the movie ‘Mary Poppins’ (1964), died this Thursday in the city of Los Angeles (USA).
Death of Johns, who was born in South African city from Pretoria in October 1923, the actress’ agent confirmed, Mitch Clem.
Johns won in 1973 Tony Award for best actress for the role of Desiree Armfeldt in “A Little Night Music”musical Broadway.
She was also an actress nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for ‘The Sundowners’ (1961) and a Golden Globe for Best Actress for ‘The Chapman Report’ (1963).
But perhaps her most famous role was her the matriarch and defender of women’s suffrage in the musical ‘Mary Poppins’ Walt Disney in which he shared the screen with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
Her portrait of mother Jane and Michael Banks, who hires the services of a magical nannyMary Poppins (Andrews), who took care of her two children, won her a Laurel Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In a statement sent to Variety magazine, Clem stated that his death ushered in a golden age Hollywood.
Johns was the oldest actress to receive the Disney Legend Awards, the Disney Hall of Fame that honors those who have contributed the most to the company.
With the death of his co-star from ‘Mary Poppins’, Dick Van Dyke, he becomes the oldest actor in Disney Legend Awards.
Johns was also the oldest actress nominated for an Oscar since 2020, when Olivia de Havilland died.
