Cold air, brown river and tall buildings passing through the fog. I didn’t feel love at first sight in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. However, you should not always be fooled by first impressions. So I started my urban journey to the banking city without any preconceptions. But to be honest, I have been thinking about what I should do in this city for a long time. Very few people go to Frankfurt for a long weekend. I did it and I didn’t regret it!

local gastronomy

What could be better than quality local food abroad? That’s right, nothing! That’s exactly why stopping at a real Frankfurt hall was high on my itinerary. With the help of ChatGPT and some travel blogs I found Zum Gemalten Haus restaurant. One of Frankfurt’s oldest and best-known cider wineries. Whatever it sounds like, this can only be a good thing.

The restaurant had plenty of Frankfurt green sauce, which consists of seven different herbs. The sauce was available with eggs, meat or things like that. Cider is recommended for this; The national drink of Frankfurt, which has been around for over 250 years. But be careful: It takes a long time to get used to the taste and it wasn’t my cup of tea. A broth that tastes very sour and a bit like vinegar. I also didn’t like the Apfelsecco, which is a mix of cider and Prosecco. So I chose to stick to local beer.

Overall conclusion about food: You can find all kinds of German food in Frankfurt. From green sauce to local meat dishes to potato pancakes. And oh wow! These were actually some of the highlights of my short trip. You can find more information about this now in point 2.

christmas market

Frankfurt has one of the oldest and largest markets in Germany with its Christmas market. Each market stall is a wooden house where you can find gift ideas or something that will fascinate your taste buds. The food was amazing – I can’t describe it any other way. We recommend potato pancakes (either store-bought or cooked at home). They look like thick potato pancakes and are deep fried. Langos is also an integral part of my snack list; A Hungarian specialty made from fried yeast dough with garlic sauce and cheese.

Rustic market stalls, fairy lights lining the market, mulled wine and crowds show just how popular Frankfurt’s Christmas market is. You really get the Christmas fever there. Otherwise, the city is not as adequately decorated and illuminated as, for example, Zurich.

Culture

Yes, Frankfurt is one of the most important financial cities in Europe, with the headquarters of the European Central Bank and Deutsche Bundesbank. But Frankfurt also has a lot to offer culturally.

On one side there is the museum district and all kinds of different museums to admire. German Film Museum, Struwwelpeter Museum, Money Museum, Romance Museum or Communication Museum. I visited the latter and was impressed by the exciting and interactive permanent exhibition as well as the additional special exhibits. One of them had to do with the topic of the arguments and how we should beat ourselves up a bit. Many of these will soon be available on Blick’s social media youth channel, Soda.

There are also various theaters and the Frankfurt Opera in the city. It is one of the most important musical theaters in Europe and has been selected as ‘Opera House of the Year’ by Opernwelt magazine for the last two years.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

He is one of the most important creators of German poetry: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). Poet and politician was born in Frankfurt am Main. You realize this relatively quickly when you are in Goethestadt. That’s why there are so many things that remind us of Goethe. There is the Goethe University, the Goethe Museum or the Goethe House. The Goethe House in the city center was the home of the Goethe family until 1795.

Frankfurt surprises with the many opportunities this city offers. In addition to the few points mentioned above, there are of course also attractions such as hop-on/hop-off tourist buses, river cruises on the Main, Germany’s second oldest zoo, the Main Tower with a wonderful view. The city and dozens of shopping opportunities for shopaholics.

It is a city that resembles a mini version of New York City with its skyscrapers. Public transport connectivity to the city is excellent whether on weekdays or weekends. I spent the night in the port park in the east of the city. Next time I’d probably choose the center because then I’m closer to everything and it’s not always a “long” drive home.
