It is not only the delicious food that comes to the table, but also a beautifully prepared table that is important. However, you do not need to go overboard when decorating the table so that there is enough space on the table. You can make a simple but effective decoration in the middle with Christmas tree branches, flowers, lanterns and candles. The festivity doesn’t have to be harsh. Colorfully patterned tablecloths, ribbons and a few Christmas decorations fit perfectly. Add some extra glamor with gold details.

To give you a little help and make your next event special, we’ve put together the following instructions for classic table setting.

Placing the plate

Start by adjusting the floor plates. This will save you from getting the tablecloth dirty. Use the chairs at the table for better orientation. The plate should be placed in front of the center of the chair and one finger away from the edge of the table. Plates with the corresponding route must then be placed on the bottom plate.

Where should all the cutlery go?

The main dinner knife is placed to the right of the plate, and the main dinner fork is placed to the left. Make sure the cutlery is a thumb’s width (or 1cm) away from the edge of the table. The starter cutlery is placed right next to the main course cutlery. To the right of the main dinner knife is the starter knife, and next to it is the soup spoon. The starter fork is located to the left of the main course fork. Place this slightly higher than the main course fork so that the upper tines of the main course fork are at the same height as the lower end of the starter fork’s tines.

On top of the plate is a dessert fork, which consists of a dessert spoon and, if necessary, a cake fork.

Dessert cutlery is placed on the serving plate, parallel to the edge of the table. You should make sure that the dessert fork is directly above it, with its handle on the left, and the dessert spoon’s handle is on the right. The distance between the cutlery should be large enough to place a credit card between them.

Correct alignment of lenses

The glasses are placed in a triangle shape on the cutlery on the right. The stem of the red wine glass should form a 90-degree angle with the dessert fork and main course knife. Place the water glass over the soup spoon, slightly below the red wine glass. The white wine glass finds its place above the water glass. Don’t forget to leave a space of about one centimeter between the glasses here, too. There should be a maximum of four glasses per guest at the table. The fourth one would be for Cüpli, for example.

Place the bread plate on the outermost side, next to the left cutlery. There are two options here. Either line it up with the tines of the appetizer fork or line it up with the middle of the bottom plate. Finally, place the butter knife on the right edge of the bread plate.

Small plates for bread or side salad are on the left side of the place setting.

Napkin

If you have not placed the bread plate in the middle of the place plate, you can place the napkin under the bread plate. Otherwise, you can fold the napkins using folding techniques and place them on the plates. Cloth napkins are best for this.

Adjusting the table always starts with the bottom plate. This is inedible. Depending on your needs and the menu, you place plates or bowls for the starter or soup on the bottom plate.
