Can you use regular baking paper multiple times without worrying?

Very practical: Instead of spending a long time scrubbing a baking tray, put a piece of baking paper inside and you won’t have to clean the tray. So do you have to throw away the baking paper after the first use?

The Bavarian Consumer Center writes that ordinary baking paper can be used several times without hesitation and you should only throw it away when it becomes brittle. The Swiss Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV) does not want to branch out and tells Blick: “We recommend that you consult and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use for baking paper.” According to some manufacturers, baking paper can be used up to six times, while others do not say anything about it.

How often you can use baking paper depends not only on the quality of the paper and coating. And also how hot you cook with it. The longer and hotter you bake it, the quicker the coated paper will go in the trash.

Permanent silicone baking mats

An alternative to baking paper is silicone baking mats. They can be used very often and are easy to clean: just rinse with water and detergent. But be careful when choosing, as there are also poor quality silicone baking mats that can be harmful to health, warns the German state laboratory in Schleswig-Holstein. You can recognize them by an unpleasant plastic smell when purchased.

BLV recommends that silicone products intended for use at high temperatures be heated at 200 °C for one hour before first use. Then wash thoroughly. Be careful not to let the silicone come into direct contact with the oven’s heating element.

The silicone baking mat should not be heated above 200 °C, although there is a note regarding application temperatures from -60 °C to +230 °C, or even +280 °C. If the product becomes worn, discolored or its non-stick effect decreases, it should be discarded.

What are cooking sprays?

You can also use cooking spray instead of baking foil. These sprays usually consist of non-hydrogenated vegetable oil, lecithin, and vegetable waxes.

They are often used when a baking tray cannot be covered with baking paper or when greasing a mold or waffle irons takes too much time. If you like the materials and don’t mind wasting money, you can use these sprays. But cleaning does not disappear completely.

But grandmother’s advice when baking cakes is still the most environmentally friendly: oil, flour and clean.
