Tang studied at the University of Rochester in New York, USA, among other places. He received his doctorate from the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston in 1996. He later became a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He founded Sensetime in 2014.
The company was blacklisted in the US in 2019 because it was seen as an arm of the “military-industrial complex” that used its technology for mass surveillance in the Uyghur province of Xinjiang. Human rights organizations accuse authorities there of mass human rights violations. Sensetime’s IPO had to be postponed in 2021 due to the company being subject to sanctions by the United States.
Sensetime’s software was also used during the coronavirus outbreak in China: to measure temperature, determine whether someone was wearing a mask properly, and make identification even with a mask.
In a statement to Sensetime, he praised Tang as “an outstanding representative in the field of artificial intelligence” and called him “knowledgeable, rigorous in science, truth-seeking and pragmatic.”
