Long Covid is definitely no fun. This has now been proven by another recent study. Because: Sleep disorders may occur after corona infection. Researchers at the medical university in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, evaluated data from approximately 252,000 coronavirus patients worldwide. Although the data was collected before November 2022, it still provides exciting information. The medical-scientific databases Medline, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were used, as well as 31 Corona studies.
The central question of the research was: How often do sleep disorders occur in the context of Long Covid? The results are shocking.
Sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness
One in three patients experienced sleep disturbances four weeks after recovering from the infection. While most cases have occurred in Europe, Long Covid patients with sleep problems have been recorded least in Southeast Asia.
Sleep disorders can take many different forms. Those affected often experienced poor sleep quality as well as problems such as excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, sleep apnea, and respiratory arrest during sleep.
And: Women were more frequently affected by sleep disorders than men. Those who were seriously ill with Covid-19 were also more likely to experience sleep disorders.
The study’s authors call for further investigation of the mechanisms behind sleep disorders. According to scientists, effective treatment strategies are needed to treat sleep disorder with Long Covid symptoms. (No)
