A rainy, gray Monday morning, the thermometer reads 8 degrees. Perfect conditions for a Tour de Suisse mulled wine edition.
But a little rain can’t stop us. Today we have a clear goal: we want to discover for our dear users where the best mulled wine can be found. Spoiler: we also found out where the mulled wine doesn’t taste good at all.
Our tour starts in Zurich’s “Wiehnachtsdorf” at Sechseläutenplatz. One advantage of the bad weather: we don’t have to queue for long. Disadvantage: the mood converges to the low point, Atmosphere: 3/10.
It’s 12:24. Kilian hasn’t eaten anything yet, Juliette has eaten a sandwich. We buy two cups of mulled wine. Costs: 6.90 francs per glass. We like it – but maybe we are biased in our assessment, because as we both live in Zurich, we know this mulled wine the most: 8/10 points.
Warning to anyone who thinks you should eat something in Zurich’s Christmas Village: don’t. The food, while good, is overpriced and the portions are often a lot of too small.
On to new shores. We drive to Lucerne, arriving at 2:26 PM. The rain is getting heavier and we are drunk. When we arrived in the city, it seemed more comfortable than in Zurich. We assess the atmosphere here 7/10. We see a sign with two beautiful words on it: “Homemade mulled wine”.
A cup costs 6 francs – we order two. A taste explosion! Cinnamon, anise and nail egg. Uiiiiii, how could we give it an 8/10 in Zurich? We give the Lucerne mulled wine a proud rating 9/10 points. Finally it is always Air up.
We’re already pretty sure that no one else can top this mulled wine in Lucerne. But the work calls: we must move on.
We don’t feel like going to Olten at all. All of us: Kilian, from Glarus, Aya, from Aargau and Juliette, from Zürich from Oberland think the same:
We, three prejudicial canton ghosts, were all the more shocked when we saw this beautiful Christmas market at 5:26 p.m. “Hey? It’s really nice here!” we shout in unison. Atmosphere: 10/10.
But we don’t forget our mission. We have to test the mulled wine. Costs: Two cups for 12 francs. The mulled wine is fine. 6/10 points. We make ourselves comfortable in the market, Juliette and Kilian go ice skating and Kilian races around on a rubber tire fake ice rink down.
Enough adrenaline, let’s move on.
We arrive in Biel and are still amazed by this great market in Olten. Disillusionment. Most stands are already closed – at 7:21 PM. Atmosphere is a strange word for this city. Evaluation: below 0.
We still find a mulled wine stand. It doesn’t seem very inviting, but as the saying goes, the devil eats flies in times of need. After all, it is the cheapest wine we drink today: 5 francs per glass. We take a sip. At first we are benevolent until the taste takes effect. And we are overwhelmed with disgust. Probably the ‘scariest’ mulled wine we’ve ever had. 3/10 points.
We go to the car with a goose. Let’s go.
Can the capital save the changed mood in Biel? We do not know. But when we see the festively decorated trees, we are reassured. It’s still raining, but that doesn’t bother us. So comfortable! We also assess the atmosphere 9/10. We can end the evening in Bern. Work first, then enjoy. Where can I get mulled wine here?
The sign is very reminiscent of the sign we saw in Zurich. The price is also identical to that in Zurich: 6.90 francs per glass. As expected it tastes the same as the one in Zurich.
We give again 8/10 Points, same as Zurich – anything else would be unfair. Although after Lucerne we know that these points are rather undeserved. If we could review it again, we’d probably give it a 7/10.
That was our mulled wine tour, a roller coaster of emotions. Where is your favorite place to drink mulled wine? And have you already found your favorite Christmas market? We look forward to talking to you in the comments.
