After Noah Baumbach convinced critics with films like ‘The Squid and the Whale’ and ‘Frances Ha’, he signed a deal with the streaming service Netflix – and delivered as a director with ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’, ‘Marriage Story’ and most recently “The White Noise” always produces very interesting dramas that are mainly praised by the press. Now it has been announced that Baumbach, who recently found great success as co-writer of the mega-hit ‘Barbie’ directed by his wife Greta Gerwig, is launching his next Netflix film. American trade publications report this unanimously.
It has also already been confirmed who will play the leading role in the yet untitled film: Adam Sandler (“The Black Diamond”) and George Clooney (“Burning after reading”). It is not yet known what the plot will revolve around and what roles the two superstars will take on. Noah Baumbach wrote the script together with actress Emily Mortimer, known for ‘Shutter Island’, among others.
Adam Sandler and Noah Baumbach reunited
The upcoming Netflix film will be the second collaboration between Adam Sandler and Noah Baumbach. Sandler has already appeared in ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’ since 2017. George Clooney, on the other hand, will work with Baumbach for the first time, although he did work on the script for ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox’, in which Clooney played the main character of the same name.
In any case, it will be interesting to see what Noah Baumbach will serve us here. It’s conceivable that more serious tones will be struck, which brings Adam Sandler at his best when he’s not in his comedic comfort zone. Whether this will be the case remains to be seen. But the dynamic with George Clooney can certainly be very exciting.
