You should take special care of your skin during the winter months.

We often have to deal with dry and cracked skin during the winter months. Brittle skin can often be caused by genetics, but during the winter months it is often caused by external factors. Because the freezing cold outside and the suffocating warm air inside do not create the most suitable atmosphere for our skin. “In winter, the air is drier on the one hand due to the heating of the interior, but at the same time the humidity is lower outdoors,” confirms Dr. med. Piotr J. Michel-Dziunycz is co-owner and medical director of the Dermatology Clinic at Zurich AG (DKZ).

The doctor continues: “Low temperatures also strip moisture from our skin: In cold weather, blood vessels under the skin contract to store body heat. Since blood circulation is less strong, the skin receives less oxygen and nutrients. Therefore, adequate care during the cold months with the use of appropriate products is very important.

Provide optimum skin support in winter

However, you cannot protect your skin in winter with just the right care products. Michel-Dziunycz also recommends wearing appropriate clothing, such as gloves for your hands, to protect you from the cold. “If you use a protective cream before spending time outdoors, you will also protect your skin,” says the skin specialist.

You can also support your skin with daily cleansing. “Hot showers and baths begin to strip moisture from the skin after about ten minutes and weaken the skin’s own lipid film,” warns DKZ co-owner. Therefore, to do something good for the skin, it is recommended to take shorter showers and showers that are not too hot.
Our body needs at least two liters of water or herbal teas every day to perform all its functions well. In addition to a balanced diet, the skin also benefits, which has a positive effect on it. “In addition to whole grain products, fruits, vegetables and, in moderation, fish, meat and eggs should also be included regularly in the menu. Minerals and vitamins such as vitamin A, C or E, zinc or magnesium are also important for beautiful and healthy skin.”

What is the best way to care for my skin in winter?

According to the doctor, the skin needs to be moisturized regularly in the form of rich creams in winter. “You should give your skin enough moisture, especially after a bath or shower.” People affected by dry skin should stay away from aggressive cleansing products and care products that strip the skin of moisture.
According to Michel-Dziunycz, creams with a high oil content are especially suitable in winter because they act as a kind of protective film for the skin, keeping the cold out and preventing too much moisture from escaping. The doctor clearly indicates which skin type is suitable for which type of product:

  • especially dry skin: rich in oil water products
  • Advert
  • mildly dry skin: mild products containing oil-in-water emulsion
  • Additionally, you can use pure oils for dry skin, provided that they are natural and of high quality, for example in a full bath. “However, products that are very oily or greasy are not recommended for the face; they can clog the sebaceous glands and thus cause impurities to form.”

    This can be done preventatively

If you know you’re suffering from dry skin before winter arrives, you can take regular care to help build your skin’s own protective barrier and strengthen your skin’s natural resistance. “This means the skin will then react less sensitively to external factors such as cold.” The best way to do this is to regularly care for your skin with moisturizing products.

When should you consult a dermatologist?

Occasional cracks on the skin during the winter months are not a cause for concern. Michel-Dziunycz explains why they sometimes take longer to heal: “In winter, the metabolism works slower, which slows down the regeneration of the upper layer of the skin.” The repair mechanism is limited.
However, if you have naturally dry skin, your doctor will recommend care products suitable for your skin type. “Sometimes all you need to do is change up your skin care routine, choose different products, drink more and eat a more balanced diet, or buy a moisturizer to improve the condition of your skin.”

    Advert

However, if your skin is suddenly very dry or if the dryness causes symptoms such as severe itching, skin cracks or eczema with discharge, you should consult a doctor. “These may be a symptom of a skin disease that needs to be clarified and treated by a dermatologist,” says Michel-Dziunycz.
