A third ‘Dune’ film is not yet guaranteed, but is certainly planned: director Denis Villeneuve announced early on that he would ideally like to make a ‘Dune’ trilogy. Work is already underway on the film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s new sequel “Dune Messiah,” although it has not yet been officially greenlit for production.
After “Dune” And “Dune: part two“, with which Frank Herbert’s novel “The Desert Planet” was adapted into a film in two parts, “Dune 3: Messiah” would then be the conclusion of the trilogy, which Villeneuve has in mind. And Villeneuve now explains it during a press conference in South Korea (via ), that preparations for a possible “Dune 3” are already in full swing: “The script is currently being written and is almost ready, but not quite yet. It takes a while.”
“Dune 3” won’t be Villeneuve’s next film
But despite his own desire to tell the science fiction saga in three parts, the filmmaker is in no hurry to actually make ‘Dune 3’ anytime soon. At the conference, he reaffirmed that he dreamed of making a third film and that it would make perfect sense for him – but that after “Dune: Part Two” he still wanted to move on to other projects.
Villeneuve explained that he started working on “Dune 2” immediately after “Dune” and “there was no break”. This time he doesn’t want to go straight from “Dune 2” to “Dune 3: Messiah” – for the sake of his own sanity, That actually sounds like a very good and, above all, sensible reason.

In any case, we’ll have to wait and see how ‘Dune: Part Two’ performs at the box office before a decision is made on a third film. He doesn’t know exactly when he will return to Arrakis, but in the best case scenario he will first focus on other things: “For my mental health, I could probably do that first.” [einen anderen Film] in between, but my dream would be to return one last time to this planet I love.
“Much better than part 1”
“Dune: Part Two,” starring Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani, will be released in theaters on February 29, 2024. During the press conference, Denis Villeneuve also indicated that he thinks “Dune 2” is better than “Dune”: “For me, this film is much better than part 1. It has something more lively about it. There is a relationship with the characters. “I tried to create an intensity and a quality of feeling that I didn’t achieve with Part 1, but that I have now achieved with Part 2,” the director said.
He won’t say the movie is perfect, but he’s much happier with “Dune 2” than he was with “Dune.” Considering that 2021’s “Dune” has already received a full five-star FILMSTARTS rating, we’re beyond excited to see what’s in store!
