Two of the young people come from Basel, two from Bern and two from Zurich: They were awarded the best film prize together with “The Last Supper” at the Energiefilm Züri competition. The jury’s justification: In this production, the excessive use of land is explained with impressive images. The young people’s approach was surprising. Jury chairman Michael Baumer, who is also a city councilor in Zurich, said in his laudatory speech: “It was precisely the call to maintain moderation that was convincing.”

“Everything has been accomplished”

“It’s amazing that we won,” says Désirée Theiler. “We accomplished everything we could at that moment, it was incredible.” But the success of his team may not be entirely coincidental: Although they are all only 15 and 16 years old, most of them have been heavily involved in cinema as a profession for years. Five of the six teenagers met at a movie kids’ summer camp; 15-year-old Désirée Theiler participated for the fourth time. At the last camp, they learned about the Energy Film Züri competition and decided to make a production for it.

Winners (from left to right): Désirée Theiler, Dean Federer, Aino Tschander, Livio von Siebenthal, Aaron Jakob and Lisa Felder.

Energy Film Züri was organized for the third time. Offered by Energie 360°, which implements sustainable energy and mobility solutions throughout Switzerland. This year, the main theme of the energy movie Züri, which has the slogan “My Energy”, is climate and energy. “Our Future” stood up. This year, 30 young people aged between 13 and 18 applied with 19 films.

Over the last six months, the teams have both developed movie spots and attended specially offered workshops. “It was very impressive to visit a professional recording studio,” says Désirée Theiler, for example.

So what is the winning movie, “The Last Supper,” about? “We show the greed of people, how they eat themselves and the world,” explains Désirée Theiler. In the video, a young woman lies motionless on a prepared table, her body covered with food, especially fruit. Three well-dressed young people feast on the fruit quite decently at first, but over time they greedily devour the fruit. “The woman on the table symbolizes the earth, which is ruthlessly exploited by humans.”

A lot happened on the phone

Six young people came together to shoot the almost two-minute film: Désirée Theiler (idea, script, acting), Dean Federer (idea, direction, acting), Aino Tschander (acting), Livio von Siebenthal (idea, script, acting) , Aaron Jakob (sound, editing) and Lisa Felder (camera, sound). They had to make a lot of phone calls and use digital technologies during the concept and preparations. “Livio and I wrote part of the script together in a Word document and spoke on the phone at the same time,” says Désirée Theiler.

It has already become clear to the team that they want to submit a production to this competition again next year. The question for Désirée Theiler is: Does she see a future for herself in the film business? “I am very interested in acting,” says the 15-year-old actor.

Two more awards

Two more films received awards at Energy Film Züri. Paul Carle and Hubert Cybulski from Zurich Küsnacht received the “Best Sustainable Idea” video award for their film “Choose the Future”.
