Gran Canaria’s biggest crowd draw: the dunes of Maspalomas.

Lunar landscapes, black and white beaches, green waters, huge volcanoes, gorges, renewable energies, waterfalls or rather steep waves? The seven main islands of the Canary Islands all have their own unique characters, just like their visitors.

Gran Canaria – for sun seekers

Although Gran Canaria is only 50 kilometers in diameter, the island has an enormous wealth of landscapes and unique vegetation. The capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is as diverse and contrasting as the island. If you want to escape the foggy autumn or the cold winter, you will find the optimal conditions for a mild holiday in Gran Canaria after just a four and a half hour flight. The island has a pleasant temperature of around 20 degrees from December to February.

La Palma – for hikers

Also called the green island: La Palma is characterized by a rugged landscape with volcanoes, gorges, waterfalls and streams. Since the island is the rainiest place in the Canary Islands, it is essential to have waterproof clothing in your luggage as well as hiking boots.

Tenerife – for active holidaymakers

There’s always something going on on the Canary Islands’ largest island, which welcomes more than two million visitors every year. But there are also quiet and mystical places: in the southern half of the island is the 3,718-meter Pico del Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, with a lava desert that bears witness to volcanic activity. The national park has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007. There is a very special energy under the 17 meter high, over 500 year old dragon tree of Icod de los Vinos in the north. The steep Los Gigantes coast to the west is also worth a visit. If you like surfing, El Médano is the right place for you!

La Gomera – for singles

Breath! There are no tourist crowds here. On the contrary: the second smallest Canary Island has an abundance of nature and secluded spots: Garajonay National Park is a bird paradise of Europe. It covers ten percent of the island and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as is the whistled language of Silbo Gomero. It is not surprising that countless bird species can be found here, as well as beautiful laurel forests. Be sure to visit the municipality of Valle Gran Rey, with its spectacular basalt rock face of Los Órganos and its palm canyon. One of the island’s few beaches is also located here.

Lanzarote – for nature lovers

Peace and relaxation – these are the two keywords of Lanzarote. The basalt stone island surprises with its black beaches and sometimes bays with beautiful lighting and fine sand. The name of the dream beach is Playa de Papagayo; Here you can dip your feet in the powdered sugar-white sand before diving into the beautiful, light green water. Timanfaya National Park, famous for its green lagoon and fire mountains, should definitely be visited. You should also drink some wine: Lanzarote’s oldest wine bar is located in the south.

Fuerteventura – for athletes and beach lovers

Wind is always a guest of Fuerteventura. This is especially popular with daredevil surfers who show off their skills in the “European Hawaii”. They prefer to do this at high waves in Punta de la Tiñosa in the north of the island. A more enjoyable walk can be enjoyed in the Parque Natural nature reserve on the southern Jandía peninsula. Fuerteventura is also a swimming paradise with its 150 kilometers of sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast, 300 days of sun and turquoise water.

El Hierro – for sustainability

Last but not least: El Hierro is the smallest island of the Canary Islands, which has many scenic seaside resorts and bays. Like La Gomera, it can only be reached by plane or ship from the neighboring island. When it comes to sustainability, El Hierro is one step ahead because it provides 100 percent renewable energy and regional products thanks to its hydro-wind power plant. Peace and quiet seekers and nature lovers will truly get their money’s worth here!
