Difference between brown and white sugar

Generally, both products are made from sugar cane or sugar beets. First, the plants are reduced in size, then cooked, pressed and processed. This creates a syrup that is then dried and processed again. Brown sugar turns into white sugar only with repeated cleaning. So what’s the difference when it comes to healthy eating?

In short: In terms of calories, both varieties have the same results: 100 grams contain slightly less than 400 kcal. Brown sugar also has no health benefits. Although it contains slightly more minerals than white sugar, these are negligible amounts and can be ignored.

Is there a “healthier” candy?

From a chemical perspective, fructose, often touted as a healthy option, also consists of mono- and disaccharides like white table sugar, with very small differences in mineral content. The same applies to raw cane sugar and honey.

So there is no healthier sugar. But this is not particularly tragic. As with all other foods, it is not the food itself, but the amount consumed and the frequency of eating that affects health.

Recommendations for sugar consumption

The Swiss Society of Nutrition SGE recommends a maximum consumption of added sugars not exceeding 10 percent of daily energy intake. This corresponds to a daily energy intake of 2000 kcal and 50 g of sugar per day.

For example, 50 g of sugar contains:

Advert
  • 5dl Coke
  • 2 Mars bars, 45g each
  • Including 2 fruit yoghurts of 180 grams each, 3 pieces of rusks

In other words: If you drink a bottle of coke, your “credit” for that day has already been exhausted. From now on, you should not eat anything containing added sugar. So no sweet drinks, no chocolate, no desserts, no yoghurt, no quark (except plain), no Emmi Café Latte, etc.
