Developed at ETH Lausanne: Swiss AI discovers plastic in the sea

Scientists tested the artificial intelligence model using Sentinel-2 satellite images under difficult atmospheric conditions such as clouds and haze. Red dots indicate correctly identified plastic waste.

EPFL announced that the artificial intelligence model developed by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and Wageningen University (NL) predicts the probability of finding waste for each pixel in satellite images.

Marine debris accumulation can be seen in the European Space Agency’s freely available Sentinel-2 satellite images, but as this contains terabytes of data, this data needs to be analyzed automatically using artificial intelligence models.

According to EPFL, the new artificial intelligence is more successful than previous models. According to EPFL, this is true even in difficult atmospheric conditions with clouds and haze. This is especially important because plastics are often washed into open water after rain. Researchers presented artificial intelligence to experts in the journal “Cell iScience”.
