In Switzerland, thousands of people have been sitting on chairs, armchairs and sofas during holidays for decades. I’m looking at a vibrating rectangle. And watch the movie “Three Nuts for Cinderella.” The 1973 Christmas classic fascinates countless people in this country every year.
This is why the Christmas movie is so popular
Why is the Christmas movie so popular? In addition to the “stunning quality of the production”, the regular broadcasting of almost all German-language public broadcasters for many years is certainly a reason, according to the SRF media office upon request. In fact, SRF releases the film once or several times a year.

How did a planned summer production turn into a winter movie?
A petite young woman wearing an old pink hooded cloak runs across a snowy terrace towards a brightly lit castle. In a window, a peephole blows into the frost blooms on the glass. This famous scene from the TV classic “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” is one that many visitors, young and old, want to recreate every day: the window of the “Ballroom” at Moritzburg Castle in Saxony is one of the four original places where the Germans performed. -Czech co-production originates from 1973.
The cult fairytale film has dominated Christmas television schedules for 50 years. It was actually supposed to be a summer movie. However, the East German film production company DEFA wanted to start shooting immediately, so everything was rewritten for the winter. The lead actress Libuše Šafránková (1953–2021) and the other actors were chill in their light Renaissance costumes, albeit with long underpants, although the fabrics were quickly padded.
Screenwriter František Pavlícek (1923–2004) also created a confident Cinderella who refuses to be defeated. “This modernity and vitality of an emancipated main character is one reason for her continued popularity,” says art historian Margitta Hensel, who has researched the Cinderella myth. But the music of composer Karel Svoboda (1938–2007) also played an important role. “It was a happy constellation,” Šafránková once recalled.
Culturologist Stefan Retzlaff also thinks the mix of fairy tales and movies is “incredibly clever.” “Everything that belongs in a fairy tale is there and recognisable, but at the same time everything that isn’t necessarily a fairy tale has been greatly modernized.”
